Swedish Network for the Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture (CAWMA)
2005-10-14
The Comprehensive Assessment (CA) was convened by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and critically evaluated the benefits, costs, and impacts of the past 50 years of water development, the water management challenges communities are facing today, and solutions people have developed.
The assessment was produced by a broad partnership of practitioners, researchers and policy makers. The final report “Water for Food, Water for Life: A Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture” was completed in 2007 and can be downloaded from http://www.iwmi.cgiar.org/Assessment/.
The Swedish Water House initiative was established to stimulate and facilitate Swedish involvement in the CA synthesis phase. Many Swedish experts from a broad spectrum of backgrounds and disciplines were involved in the writing and reviewing of the synthesis chapters. Specific support was provided to the organisation and development of the chapter “Agriculture, Water and Ecosystems: Avoiding the cost of going too far”. The cross-cutting nature of the chapter has allowed the lead authors to work closely with all other chapters of the CA, from irrigation to water productivity to fisheries.
This initiative allowed Swedish experts to be involved in an important global process and reinforced links between the Swedish Water House, Swedish academic institutions and NGOs, IWMI and many other CA partner and sponsor organisations.
