The Swedish Environmental Flows Initiative

Environmental flows describe the quantity, quality and timing of water flows required to sustain freshwater and estuarine ecosystems and the human livelihoods and well-being that depend on these ecosystems.
-The Brisbane Declaration, 2007

The Swedish Environmental Flows Initiative cooperates with a wide range of actors both in Sweden and internationally. The main purpose of our work is to raise awareness, increase knowledge and facilitate a process to integrate the concept of environmental flows into policy and regulation. Our current focus is highlighting the linkages between ecosystem services provided by river flows and human well-being, especially for poor people directly dependent on these services.

The Swedish Environmental Flows Initiative also provides input and is a partner to eflownet, the Global Environmental Flows Network. Eflownet aims to facilitate communication, capacity building and education to expand the recognition and adoption of environmental flows globally. For more information please visit www.eflownet.org.
